Finding Out More: Are Dental X-Rays Related to Thyroid Cancer?

There is much controversy over whether or not dental x-rays cause thyroid cancer, or can give a person a greater risk of developing this type of cancer. Some experts believe that if you get 10 or more mouth x-rays, you are five and a half times more susceptible to developing thyroid cancer. Of course, the science has yet to be proven. Many doctors believe that this is not a cause of thyroid cancer because the glands and other sensitive tissues are protected with a neck shield while your dentist x-rays your teeth.

The quality of x-rays has improved over the years, and they can now only x-ray the tooth or set of teeth that they need without affecting the other parts of the face. This is why some dentists feel this is not a cause of thyroid cancer. Others feel differently, and only perform x-rays when medically necessary. Additionally, they make sure the neck and chest area of the patient is fully covered during the procedure. This will help protect even the most sensitive organs and tissues in the areas during the x-ray.
As technology advances, scientists are learning more about the risks and dentists are responding accordingly. Talk to your Frisco dentist to see what measures they can take to protect their patients from harm and his thoughts on the controversy.
