Safe and Painless Root Canal Treatment

Many patients believe that root canal therapy is a painful procedure, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. This safe and painless treatment may be necessary if a patient’s teeth are infected, decayed, or abscessed.

At Advanced Smiles, our team is committed to supporting your oral health. Dr. De Paoli will take every necessary precaution to ensure your root canal treatment is as painless and stress-free as possible.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

If a bacterial infection reaches the root of the tooth, this could lead to the spread of infection and other serious complications. Root canal therapy can help prevent further damage and infection. To better understand this treatment, it helps to be aware of a tooth’s three layers.

  1. Enamel: The hard, visible outer layer of the tooth.
  2. Dentin: The thick layer of tissue underneath the enamel.
  3. Pulp: The soft layer of tissue beneath the dentin that contains the tooth’s nerves and blood vessels.

During root canal therapy, the tooth’s pulp is removed to stop the spread of infection and preserve the tooth’s natural structure. This painless process can typically be completed in as few as two visits to our Frisco office. Dr. De Paoli will provide you with an estimated treatment timeline at your initial consultation.

When is Root Canal Therapy Necessary?

Dr. De Paoli will likely recommend root canal treatment if you experience the following symptoms:

  • Severe toothache
  • Prolonged sensitivity or pain when eating hot or cold foods
  • Discolored teeth
  • Swelling in the gums
  • Draining fistula that appears on the gums near the tooth

If you suspect you may need root canal therapy, don’t wait to seek treatment. When left untreated, the infection can spread to your surrounding teeth, gums, and jaw.

Schedule an appointment at our Frisco office as soon as possible by calling (972) 668-3680. Dr. De Paoli will assess your condition and determine which treatment will most effectively relieve your pain and discomfort.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

In most cases, root canal treatment will require multiple visits to our Frisco office. During your first visit, Dr. De Paoli will take digital x-rays to determine if there’s an infection in the tooth and evaluate the shape of the root canal.

Next, Dr. De Paoli will administer a local anesthetic before drilling a small hole in your tooth to access its center. He’ll then remove the dental pulp and any decayed nerve tissue, debris, and bacteria.

Once the tooth has been cleaned out, it will be filled with a dental composite and sealed. In some cases, this may require a second appointment to ensure no infection remains. Dr. De Paoli will then place a dental crown to restore and protect your tooth.
