Wisdom Teeth Removal
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop and usually in a person’s teenage years. It is crucial to visit your dentist regularly, allowing them to take and update your xrays and images so third molars can be detected, monitored and removed if necessary.
Why and When Wisdom Teeth Should be Removed
When there is not adequate space for the third molars to grow and erupt, they become misaligned, sometimes developing at an angle or horizontally. As the molars come to the surface they put pressure on the other teeth often forcing them to shift, crowd and become damaged. This is very painful.
Wisdom teeth also can be impacted meaning they are enclosed within the soft tissue and/or the jawbone or only partially break through or erupt through the gum. Partial eruption of the wisdom teeth allows an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and cause infection, which results in pain, swelling, jaw stiffness, and general illness. Partially erupted teeth are also more prone to tooth decay and gum disease because their hard-to-reach location and awkward positioning makes brushing and flossing difficult.
Your dentist should inform you if he feels your wisdom teeth could cause complications with their development. Extracting the wisdom teeth before they can damage your smile is often a safe and painless solution. At Advanced Smiles, we offer wisdom teeth removal in house and with multiple sedation and financial options.
Sedation Options for Wisdom Teeth Removal
Advanced Smiles is equipped and certified to offer different options for sedation with oral surgery. Our physicians will recommend which type of sedative or combination of sedatives is right for you and your procedure. Because our patients’s comfort is a top priority, most wisdom teeth extraction procedures done in our office are under general anesthesia. (The patient is placed in peaceful sleep state, is easily awaken and will have no memory of the actual surgery.) Local anesthesia and laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide) are also available sedation alternatives.
